(It does alert you before it closes the activity and you can stop it from doing it. I then had to start a new activity which split the hike into two different activities. I got caught out once when the watches auto power save feature closed the activity after being on the stop screen for too long. When the auto pause is switched off you have to manually stop the activity when you stop for a break. You know when it is paused because the screen has an orange bar around the screen. For terrain where you can walk quickly it works well, but when you are going up hill or walking slower it can stay paused when you are moving.

I’m going to use OS online maps to illustrate how I create a GPX from scratch, but you can download a pre-made one if you wish and skip this bit. Read my review to find out what you can do with it. You do have to pay a yearly subscription, but they are very affordable and give you access to UK wide maps, not to mention the fantastic detail. Personally, I like using the OS online maps.

That being said, one of the best ways to spruce up your watch is to install custom watch faces. In my last article, I discussed whether I though the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus was worth it for hiking in 2020, after over 12 months of use. A Garmin Approach golf-themed watch, for example, can be used to track hiking specific stats, or display a star-chart, merely by installing new content. Almost any of Garmin’s wearables can be enhanced by adding new device apps or custom data fields, which allows the watch to track more than it does natively. You can also download apps, widgets, and other updates via ConnectIQ depending on the device you own. More are added to the store regularly, so it’s always good to check back and see what’s new. You can browse, download and rate them via ConnectIQ. Like much of Garmin’s downloadable content, the watch faces are created by third-party developers. If you’d like to check whether or not your device is supported you can visit Garmin’s ConnectIQ storefront. Some of the Garmin smartwatches that support custom watch faces include Fenix 6, Forerunner 235, Vivoactive 3, Forerunner 45, Forerunner 245 and Forerunner 945. They can also be personalized by downloading and installing custom watch faces, which completely change the way the main display looks. Several of Garmin’s latest watches offer support for apps, music and other smart features.
